Getting to Akureyri
Akureyri has its own international airport although the only international flights are to Greenland. There’s a flight from Reykjavik Airport as well as the international airport at Keflavik in the summer months. Elsewhere, you can fly to the even more remote location of Grimsey Island and enjoy almost complete isolation.

Getting out of the Town
As with many of the main Icelandic towns, Akureyri is located on the island’s ring road so is reasonably easily accessed although distances are long and the roads picturesque rather than fast. The airport is 3 km from the town centre and served by the local, infrequent free buses.

Places to Stay
Try the Lamb Inn, a delightful hotel based on an old farm which has outdoor hot tubs with great views. For sheer convenience, try the Hotel Akureyri, located in the main street and so handy for all the town’s attractions.

Must See Places in Akureyri

• Art Canyon, so named as it has dozens of artist’s studios crammed into a narrow valley, is the best place for the serious art collector to visit.
• See a show put on by the local drama society – the only one outside of the capital
• Near the centre of town is a swimming pool, ice pool, thermal pool and spa centre with waterslides for the kids. It’s a great way to spend a relaxing day.
• Iceland isn’t renowned for shopping but in Hafnarstraeti you’ll find some of the best of what it can offer including designers, gifts and handicrafts.
• Lystigardurinn is unusual in being a botanical garden not far from the Arctic Circle. An unusual collection of plants grow there so it’s worth an hour or two of your time in the tranquil surroundings.
